Meet the VSAE board of 2023
Meet the new board
A few weeks ago, Lobke, Esmée, Selma and Sven started their board year. This coming year the four of them will be in charge of the entire VSAE. They will be working with the partners, members of the VSAE and the UvA to make sure everything runs smoothly and everyone can enjoy their student time next to their studies.
Lobke: Chairman & Marketing Officer
Can you start with an introduction of yourself?
I’m Lobke, I’m 19 years old and I’m in my third year of bachelor Econometrics. This year I’m the Chairman and Marketing Officer of the VSAE. As Chairman, I keep track of the association, long term vision and the rest of the board. As Marketing Officer, I make sure we, as an association, are representable to ‘the outside world’.
Why did you choose to do a board year?
Last year, I was in the Business Orientation Days committee, which is a really big committee. I really enjoyed this. Toward the end of the committee year, we were getting really busy and we spent a lot of time here in the board room working on the event. The atmosphere here was always really nice. I enjoy my time with the VSAE and love the balance between productive work and fun social moments in between the work we do. When we were working on the Business Orientation Days I liked it so much that I thought: ‘I wouldn’t mind sitting here all week’. So a logical step was doing a board year.
What are your expectations for this year and what are you looking forward to?
I’m really excited about another year of great events and activities. During my first year and a half at the VSAE, the contact was less because of COVID, but I saw this increasing a lot this past year. I’m hoping that people will connect even more with the VSAE and each other this year, and that everyone will feel safe and at home. This is also my biggest hope as Chairman for this year: I hope everyone feels welcome and at home at the VSAE.
Esmée: Treasurer & External Affairs
Can you start with an introduction about yourself?
My name is Esmée, I’m 20 years old. This year I’ll be fulfilling the positions of Treasurer and, together with Sven, External Affairs. I’m from Maarssen and I’m in the third year of my studies right now.
Why did you decide to do a board year?
I was sitting at home for a year and a half because of COVID. I felt like my student time went by way too fast so I wanted to extend my student time by doing some else for a year. I didn’t want to do something useless, so I thought a board year would be a great opportunity for me.
What are your expectations for this year and what do you hope to learn?
I’m excited to learn a lot during my board year, but to also have a great time and balance it with all the activities. As Treasurer, I’m hoping to learn a lot of accounting skills, which is also very important in my function this year.
What are you looking forward to this year?
The skiing trip is the first thing we’re doing, so I’m really looking forward to that. I really love skiing so it’s a great first activity. I’m also really looking forward to organizing all the other great events this year that both we and all our members can enjoy.
What will you be doing specifically as Treasurer this year?
The most important thing is to keep track financially of the whole association and our committees. Also, I’m in charge of dividing all of the money that is coming in over all of the committees this year.
Selma: Internal Affairs & Secretary
Can you start with an introduction of yourself?
My name is Selma and I will be the Internal Affairs and Secretary this year. My task as Internal Affairs officer will mainly be meeting with everyone who’s interested in doing a committee, seeing which committees they would like to do, and finding a committee that suits them. As Secretary, I’m responsible for taking all minutes during board meetings as well as general meetings and sending these to the advisory board so they can stay up to date.
Why did you choose to do a board year?
I was already doing 4 committees, so it felt like a natural step. I also thought it would be a super fun experience. I’m working here with 3 other people who are super motivated and passionate about the same thing. As the first and only international on the board it is also a really nice opportunity for me to improve my Dutch since I get to practise speaking it every day.
What are your expectations for the upcoming year?
A really fun year, but also a really busy year. Hopefully, I will learn a lot and meet a lot of new people, but also get to know our current members better. Right now I’m really excited about the skiing trip, I think it will be really fun and a nice opportunity to bond with the new board and also to meet the members and get to know them better.
Sven: External Affairs & Vice-Chairman
Can you start with an introduction of yourself?
I’m Sven, this year I’m in charge of External Affairs with Esmée and I’m Vice-Chairman as well. I’m from Castricum and I’m in the second year of my studies.
Why did you decide to do a board year?
I always enjoyed being at the VSAE at all the events, borrels, and trips. I also did some committees already which I had a lot of fun in. When I saw the applications opened I had a chat with Randy and Ira and from there on I really felt like it was something for me.
What are you excited about this year?
I’m really looking forward to the skiing trip and organising big events with the committees. I’m working on the actuarial congress right now, I think the experience of being at an event that we have organised ourselves feels rewarding.
How are you planning to keep all the contracts with companies this year?
I think it’s important to maintain all our relationships with companies and keep in touch with them on a personal level. We will do this to make sure that they are happy with what we do for them and the other way around as well.
